Soil color is a crucial aspect of understanding a landscape’s history, mineralogy, and organic matter accumulation. This framework offers a comprehensive understanding of the utilization and interpretation of soil resources through a qualitative approach. Soil color can be used as a narrative to educate people about different types of soils and their relationships with geologic features. The Soil and Plant Science Division has created maps and images showcasing soil colors in both vertical and horizontal dimensions, allowing people to understand the interconnectedness and variation of soils and geologic features across the landscape.
